5 reasons why Dua Lipa is an ICON

When I was a teenager, going through break-ups that genuinely made me feel like the world was ending, I resorted to Taylor Swift. She helped me through the dark times and the good times, I truly resonated with her lyrics and emotions and I related to her songs. I think when my most recent ex and I broke up, I must have listened to “Bad Blood” over a thousand times. But it’s time for Tay Tay to take a back seat, because there is a new queen in town. I still love Taylor Swift, and I listen to her old songs for old times sake but she’s definitely becoming less and less relatable and I still haven’t decided whether I’m ok with the whole “the old Taylor is dead” thing.

I am currently in a very happy relationship and god forbid if we ever broke up. But a few of my friends have gone through break-ups in the past couple of years and I can’t help but feel a bit jealous that they have the support of Dua Lipa’s tunes to get them through the tough days. I adore my boyfriend but there’s something about the way she sings about men that makes you feel so powerful. She recently won two BRIT awards and you can understand why! She’s so likeable and relatable, and not to mention, flipping stunning!

To celebrate her success at the 2018 BRITS and because I’ve recently realised that she is an actual QUEEN. I’ve decided to share 5 reasons why I think she is an icon!

I absolutely LOVE her lyrics. I feel like it must be so hard in the music industry to compete with all the songs about broken hearts and horrible men but she’s smashed it out of the park! @ any of my single friends – PLEASE just make yourself a Dua playlist and listen to it every single day on full blast because I truly feel like that could contribute towards mending your broken hearts! Here are a few of my favourite lines from her songs:

“So I cut you off
I don’t need your love
‘Cause I already cried enough
I’ve been done
I’ve been movin’ on since we said goodbye
I cut you off
I don’t need your love, so you can try all you want
Your time is up, I’ll tell you why
You say you’re sorry
But it’s too late now
So save it, get gone, shut up
‘Cause if you think I care about you now
Well, boy, I don’t give a fuck”

“One, don’t pick up the phone
You know he’s only calling ’cause he’s drunk and alone
Two, don’t let him in
You’ll have to kick him out again
Three, don’t be his friend
You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning
And if you’re under him
You ain’t getting over him”

2. Her outfits

Ok, seriously, let’s talk about her fashion sense. She could probably wear a bin bag covered in shit and still look amazing. Her dress for the BRITS was just breathtaking and I feel like I would look like an overweight flamingo if I even dared to wear something that “out there.” She has an insane figure and seems to pull off all outfits she wears. I love how she doesn’t really follow trends, she clearly does her own thing and slays each and every time!

3. Humble beginnings

Dua Lipa actually started out on Youtube! It seemed to me like she was just kind of there one day but nope! She sang cover songs on Youtube from the age of 14 and worked her way up to become the pop sensation we all know and love today! She then moved away to London when she was just 16 years old to pursue a career in music. She jumped from retail jobs to hospitality jobs but she always knew that music was her passion and despite the musical competition in London, I think it’s fair to say she’s made it!

4. She writes her own songs

I struggle to comprehend that Dua Lipa is the same age as me. It just baffles me that two girls of the same age can be in totally different places in life. When you really think about that, it’s quite scary! She’s so successful and has an ever-growing fan base and the best thing is… She writes her own songs which for me, adds to her raw talent! For a 22 year old girl, to express herself with song-writing just amazes me but then again, I guess I express myself by writing my blog posts but I can’t see me winning any awards any time soon! She also wrote “Wake Up Alone” by The Chainsmokers. Is there anything she can’t do?

5. She’s a feminist

In a 2016 interview, Dua Lipa said she wanted to use her platform to teach the younger generation the importance of gender equality. “It’s a crazy time in the world. Women are the fucking future. And we’re going to take over the world. That’s really what I think. I think if you’re not a feminist, you’re sexist. Both men and women.” Literally, could we love her more?!
